Poipet City Flood Situation Assessed, Swift Response Ordered for Affected Residents

Poipet City, Cambodia - On September 18, 2026, a site inspection was conducted to assess the flood damage caused by a cross-border river. Dr. Pan Kham Bunthon, Secretary of State of the Council of Ministers and Head of the Government Working Group for Poipet City, accompanied by Mr. Keat Hul, Governor of Poipet City, the Director of the Provincial Department of Water Resources of Banteay Meanchey, the Chief of Police of Poipet City, the Commander of the Gendarmerie of Poipet City, along with several commune chiefs and relevant authorities and forces, inspected the situation firsthand. The inspection covered the homes of residents living along the border river and several locations affected by flooding due to rainwater flowing from Thailand. The floods have impacted residents' homes, a pagoda (Stueng Bot Pagoda), and some schools. Following the inspection of multiple sites, Dr. Pan Kham Bunthon immediately deployed machinery to excavate and expedite water drainage. He also issued orders to local authorities, security forces, civil defense forces, and the youth force for peace in Banteay Meanchey province to be prepared to intervene and rescue citizens in case of any emergency. Dr. Pan Kham Bunthon will remain stationed in Poipet City on a 24-hour basis to oversee operations. The flooding, attributed to rainwater originating from Thailand, has affected the lives of residents in the border areas of Poipet City. The Cambodian government has demonstrated its commitment to promptly assess the damage and provide assistance to the affected population. Poipet City, being a key border trade hub with Thailand, could see indirect economic impacts if infrastructure is affected.
