Cambodia Named Guest of Honour at Angoulême French-Language Film Festival
Cambodia has been selected as the Guest of Honour for the 19th Angoulême French-Language Film Festival. This year, the Kingdom of Cambodia has been selected as the Guest of Honour for the 19th Angoulême French-Language Film Festival, which will take place from August 24 to 29, 2026. This was announced by the Cambodian Embassy in the French Republic. On July 9, 2026, the Cambodian Embassy in the French Republic, in collaboration with the festival's working group, organized a press conference at the Charles Floquet residence in Paris to showcase this special event and promote the Cambodian film sector. Speaking at the occasion, H.E. Ly Davit, Cambodian Ambassador to France, expressed his profound emotion and pride in Cambodia receiving this distinguished honour. He stated that this recognition holds deep significance, coinciding with the Kingdom of Cambodia's role as host of the 20th Francophonie Summit, scheduled to be held in Phnom Penh on November 15 and 16, 2026. "This is a testament to the historical relationship between Cambodia and the Francophonie community, as well as the important role of culture, especially cinema, in promoting people-to-people dialogue," H.E. Ambassador Ly Davit affirmed. He further added that Cambodia's selection as Guest of Honour provides an opportunity to honour His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk, one of the founding fathers of the Francophonie movement and a significant figure in Cambodian cinema. His Majesty was a writer, director, producer, and actor, who considered film an influential medium for disseminating culture, national identity, and strengthening people-to-people dialogue. His legacy continues to inspire the resurgence of the Cambodian film industry and contribute to its growth on the international stage. During the event, H.E. Ambassador Ly Davit also recounted the key stages of Cambodian cinema history, from its golden era in the 1960s through its destruction under the Khmer Rouge regime, before highlighting the subsequent revival of the Cambodian film industry due to the efforts of a new generation of filmmakers whose works are contributing to enhancing Cambodia's prestige on the international stage.
