PNP Studying Amendments to SIM Registration Law

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday said it was studying possible amendments to Republic Act No. 11934, or the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) Registration Law. "The PNP is ready to provide its insights and data that will push for the amendment of the law, making it more effective when it comes," PNP spokesperson Col. Jean Fajardo said in a radio interview. The SIM Registration Law, which took effect on July 30, 2023, requires all SIM card users to register their personal information, including their full name, address, and date of birth, before activating their SIM cards. The law aims to curb criminal activities such as SMS scams, disinformation, and other forms of cybercrime by making it easier for law enforcement agencies to identify and track down perpetrators. However, months after its implementation, the PNP may find that there is room for further improvement in how law enforcement agencies can pursue criminals. While the PNP has not specified what amendments they are considering, it is likely that they are looking for ways to enhance the law's effectiveness in deterring criminal activities. Scams and fraudulent online activities remain a significant concern in the Philippines, and the government continues to explore various measures to combat these crimes.
