The leaders reportedly agreed to extend the "trade truce" designed to temporarily avert escalation of the trade war, with the extension initially set for January 10, 2026, though its future remains uncertain. One of the primary focuses of the meeting was the establishment of an AI safety mechanism, a topic of growing concern within the U.S. Expectations were high for a mechanism where both sides would notify each other of concerning incidents. However, President Trump maintained his reluctance to strengthen regulations on AI development, aligning with China's desire to maintain its advantage in the AI race. Consequently, no concrete progress was made on AI cooperation. The Taiwan issue remains a significant flashpoint. President Xi Jinping reiterated his call for the U.S. to adhere to the "correct position of opposing 'Taiwan independence.'" China, which conflates Taiwan's ruling party and president with "Taiwan independence forces," seeks a stronger statement of "opposition" from the U.S. than its traditional phrasing of "does not support Taiwan independence." However, no clear commitment was obtained from the U.S. side, and the situation regarding arms sales to Taiwan, which have been on hold, saw no change. This summit is considered to have played a certain role in building personal relationships between the leaders and avoiding escalation of conflict. However, it did not lead to the resolution of fundamental issues in various fields such as trade, technology, and security. The effectiveness of China's new slogan, "strategic stability" in China-U.S. relations, remains to be seen.
