The Lao government has awarded the Friendship Medal to the outgoing Ambassador of Malaysia to Laos, Eddy Iwan, in recognition of his significant contributions to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries. Ambassador Iwan received the medal on July 8 from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Thongsavanh Phomvihane, as he concludes his more than three-year tenure in Laos. Deputy Prime Minister Phomvihane highlighted the continuous strengthening of relations over the past six decades across various sectors, including politics, trade, investment, education, tourism, agriculture, banking, clean energy, and people-to-people exchanges. He specifically noted Malaysia's support for Laos' 2024 ASEAN Chairmanship and the Malaysia Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), which has trained over 2,000 Lao officials since 1991. The ambassador's role in promoting business cooperation and investment, including the inaugural ASEAN-Malaysia Business Summit held in Laos last year, was also commended. During separate farewell calls on July 8 and 9, Vice President Vienthong Siphandone and Bounleua Phandanouvong, Head of the Commission for External Relations of the Central Committee of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party, also praised the ambassador for deepening cooperation in education, trade, investment, and tourism, and for advancing friendship between the two nations. Ambassador Iwan expressed his gratitude for the strong support from the Lao Party, government, and people, describing his posting as both productive and memorable. He pledged to continue serving as a bridge for closer Laos-Malaysia relations by encouraging greater cooperation, investment, and exchanges between the two countries after completing his diplomatic assignment.
