Tinio Criticizes Marcos Jr. Over Alleged Inaction on Transboundary Haze

MANILA, Philippines — ACT Teachers party-list Rep. Antonio Tinio on Thursday criticized President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for his alleged inaction on the issue of transboundary haze originating from Indonesia, which has affected air quality in parts of the Philippines. Tinio made the remark during the House sponsorship and plenary. Tinio argued that the President should take a more proactive stance on this regional environmental issue. Transboundary haze, caused by smoke and particulate matter from forest and peat fires, can spread across borders via wind, potentially causing severe impacts on public health and economic activities. Parts of the Philippines, particularly the southern islands, are vulnerable to the effects of this haze. This issue necessitates cooperation among ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states. ASEAN has previously signed the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution, but its effectiveness remains a subject of debate. Tinio's criticism reflects a call for the Philippine government to actively engage in problem-solving, both under the agreement and by demonstrating regional leadership. The Marcos administration's environmental policies, especially concerning issues requiring inter-regional cooperation, will continue to be closely watched.
