MANILA, Philippines — The arguments raised by the former Supreme Court (SC) chief justices on reducing the number needed to convict impeachable officials should senator-judges be absent benefits the prosecution, Batangas Rep. Gerville Luistro said on Wednesday. In an ambush interview after a break in the Senate Impeachment Court’s discussions on the threshold needed to convict impeachable officials, Luistro explained that the suggestions from the former top magistrates, who served as amici curiae (friends of the court), could aid the prosecution. “It benefits the prosecution,” Luistro said when asked about the impact of the amici curiae’s arguments on the impeachment proceedings. The Senate, acting as an impeachment court, is currently deliberating on the required vote count to convict an impeachable official. The arguments from the former chief justices are being considered as part of the process to define this threshold.
