Thailand-Vietnam Diplomatic Relations Mark 50 Years, Partnership Deepens

Thailand and Vietnam are celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations with an event highlighting the deepening of their ties into a "strategic partnership." The commemorative event was hosted by the Royal Thai Embassy in Hanoi, with support from the Central Committee of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front. Mr. Sophon Saram, Speaker of the House of Representatives and President of the National Assembly, delivered an opening speech as an honored guest. He emphasized the development of Thai-Vietnamese relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties on August 6, 1976. The two nations have grown from neighbors into a comprehensive strategic partnership based on trust, sincerity, and mutual support, encompassing political, security, economic, and people-to-people exchanges. Speaker Sophon underscored the crucial role of the parliaments of both countries in promoting legislative cooperation, exchanging experiences, and driving collaborations that benefit their citizens. He also highlighted their joint efforts in addressing contemporary challenges such as drug suppression, transnational crime, and enhancing cybersecurity, thereby contributing to peace and security in the ASEAN region. He expressed confidence that the strong friendship between Thailand and Vietnam will continue to be nurtured and expanded at all levels, leading to shared prosperity and sustainable improvement in the quality of life for both peoples. Following the ceremony, Speaker Sophon led a Thai parliamentary delegation to visit an exhibition of Thai silk and national costumes, showcasing the cultural identity and wisdom of both nations. He met with H.E. Ms. Ha Thi Nga, Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, Vice Chairperson, and Secretary General of the Central Committee of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front, as well as Thai expatriates, Thai private sector representatives in Hanoi, and Vietnamese guests. These interactions aimed to strengthen cooperation networks and enhance relationships between the government, business, and public sectors, serving as a key mechanism to further solidify the comprehensive strategic partnership. Subsequently, Speaker Sophon and his delegation visited Ngoc Son Temple on Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi. They were welcomed and accompanied by Hon. Mr. Dinh Cong Sy, Vice Chairman of the National Assembly of Vietnam. Ngoc Son Temple, or "Temple of the Jade Mountain," is a significant religious and historical site, recognized as a symbol of Hanoi. Situated on a small island in Hoan Kiem Lake, it is linked to the legend of Emperor Le Loi returning a sacred sword to a giant turtle deity after Vietnam's independence. The temple reflects national identity, pride in history, and enduring Vietnamese beliefs. Within the temple, revered deities and figures are enshrined, including Wenchang Dijun, the god of wisdom and education; Tran Hung Dao, a hero who defended Vietnam against Mongol invasions in the 13th century; and Guan Yu, a symbol of loyalty, fidelity, and virtue. This reflects the fusion of Confucianism, Taoism, and local beliefs that form the cultural foundation of Vietnamese society. During this visit, the Thai parliamentary delegation gained insights into Vietnam's history, beliefs, and cultural heritage. They exchanged views on preserving historical heritage sites and promoting national identity. This exchange not only fostered better understanding between the peoples of both countries but also demonstrated the role of cultural diplomacy in strengthening Thai-Vietnamese relations, particularly during this 50th anniversary milestone. In the evening, Speaker Sophon and his delegation are scheduled to pay a courtesy call on the Prime Minister of Vietnam at the Government Office. Following this, they will attend a dinner with representatives from Thailand and the Thai Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam at 6:00 PM.
