Vietnam Collects DNA Samples for Martyr Identification
Quang Ninh province in northeastern Vietnam has completed DNA sample collection from unidentified war martyrs buried at 18 cemeteries nationwide. This initiative aims to build a national database for fallen soldiers, facilitating identification using advanced NGS-SNP technology that can trace kinship to distant relatives.
The northeastern coastal province of Quang Ninh has completed the collection of DNA samples from the remains of all unidentified war martyrs buried at 18 cemeteries across 15 localities nationwide, achieving full completion by July 14. The collected DNA samples will feed into a national DNA database for fallen soldiers’ relatives. This initiative is expected to create a critical resource for matching unidentified remains with martyrs whose information has long been lost. Utilizing the advanced NGS-SNP (Next-Generation Sequencing Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) technology, kinship analysis can now extend beyond immediate family members to relatives as distant as the fourth or fifth generation. This significantly increases the chances of identification.
