Cambodia First Outside China to Deploy BYD's Ultra-Fast EV Charging Tech

Cambodia has become the first country outside China authorized to deploy BYD’s ultra‑fast electric vehicle charging technology, which can fully charge a battery in about 10 minutes, officials said. Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, who also serves as First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), led a delegation to BYD’s headquarters in Shenzhen on Saturday, where he was received by chairman and chief executive Wang Chuanfu, according to a government statement. Talks focused on BYD’s Flash Charging Flagship Station, an ultra‑fast charging system already installed in China. Cambodia was named the first overseas market authorized to operate the technology, with rollout underway in Phnom Penh, Preah Sihanouk and Siem Reap. Eighteen flagship stations are expected to be operational by the end of 2026. At BYD’s exhibition center, the delegation viewed demonstrations of the company’s battery technology, including performance tests in extreme cold and a nail penetration test, an industry standard for assessing fire and explosion resistance under structural damage. In bilateral discussions, Chanthol urged BYD to expand investment in Cambodia, citing opportunities to scale up local EV assembly, expand the charging network and transfer technology to train the workforce. Wang said BYD would continue evaluating investment feasibility, noting Cambodia’s development trajectory and supportive policies, though no new commitments were announced. The visit was part of a week‑long investment mission to Guangdong province that also included meetings with Huawei and a Chinese producer of EV battery cathode materials. Officials said Cambodia, which currently has limited EV manufacturing capacity, is seeking to position itself within the regional supply chain as part of efforts to diversify its economy beyond garments and footwear.
