Ilocos Norte Logs 32 Leptospirosis Cases, 1 Death

SAN ILDEFONSO, Ilocos Sur — A total of 32 leptospirosis cases, including one death, have been recorded in nearby Ilocos Norte this year, according to the Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (PESU). Of the reported cases, 26 were classified as suspect cases, three as probable cases, and three as confirmed cases. One death was also recorded. Leptospirosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease transmitted through contact with water or soil contaminated by the urine of infected animals, primarily rodents and livestock. The risk of infection increases, especially after floods or heavy rains when puddles are common. In the Philippines, leptospirosis is a concern every year, particularly during the rainy season, due to the tropical climate, sanitation conditions in some areas, and vulnerability to natural disasters. Ilocos Norte, a predominantly agricultural province, often sees cases linked to farming activities or contact with water bodies. This report highlights the ongoing need for public health awareness and preventive measures in the province.
