3 August 2026 Aung San Suu Kyi–ICRC Meeting The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) held a rare, private meeting with detained civilian leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on 3 August, the organization said, adding that observations from the visit would remain confidential and be shared only with prison authorities, in line with its standard practice for visits to people deprived of liberty. The ICRC said the meeting also gave Suu Kyi the opportunity to exchange messages with her family. Myanmar’s military regime, which released photographs of the meeting including images of Suu Kyi cutting a birthday cake, said its ICRC Resident Representative to Myanmar, Arnaud de Baecque, met her on the morning of 3 August. Nay Phone Latt, spokesperson for the opposition National Unity Government’s (NUG) Prime Minister’s Office, said the single photograph released only through the junta’s propaganda channels would not be enough to change international opinion. Suu Kyi’s son, Kim Aris (Htein Lin), described the meeting as the first positive development in more than five years, though he said the family remains cautious since they have not been able to independently verify her health and living conditions. Her legal team’s request to meet with her has also seen no update as of 3 August. Conflict, Arson and Airstrikes Heavy fighting continued near Phalu, south of Myawaddy Township, between KNLA joint forces and Myanmar military troops, with the regime reportedly carrying out airstrikes using fighter jets and Y-12 aircraft dropping 500-pound bombs. Artillery shells fired by the military landed inside Thailand’s Mae Ku village, damaging five civilian houses and a monastery; Thai authorities evacuated residents to temporary shelters. In Magway Region’s Myaing Township, more than 90 houses were burned after military troops raided and set fire to Baw Bin village. Since 13 July, more than 200 homes across seven villages in the township have reportedly been destroyed by fire. Separately, a Myanmar Air Force fighter aircraft crashed during a training flight in Hmawbi Township, Yangon Region, after reportedly colliding with a bird and its engine catching fire; the pilot ejected safely. In Chin State, a 52-year-old woman was killed after being struck by bullets during indiscriminate firing by junta troops near the View Point in Hakha, according to CDF-Hakha. A TIU report said the military is constructing new airstrips approximately every 50 miles across Tanintharyi Region to facilitate low-altitude air operations using gyrocopters, paramotors and Y-12 aircraft. Border Environment and Public Protest Environmental groups staged a peaceful protest in Chiang Mai, Thailand, calling for an end to transboundary pollution caused by mining operations inside Myanmar, gathering outside the Myanmar Consulate-General to demand action from the regime. Thai civil society organizations warned that proposed amendments by the Myanmar military to the Terms of Reference (TOR) on cross-border river water quality management – expected to be signed during junta leader Min Aung Hlaing’s visit to Thailand – could effectively legitimize environmental destruction. Floods and Natural Disasters The opposition NUG’s Ministry of Social Welfare, Labour and Humanitarian Affairs (MSLHA) warned of possible flooding across Yangon and seven other states and regions due to an intensified monsoon and a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. More than 10,000 acres of monsoon paddy fields were inundated in Laymyethna Township, though regional authorities said this represented only 0.31 percent of the region’s total monsoon cultivation area and would have limited impact on overall production. Emergency work using geo-bags and sandbags continues at the breached Ngawun River embankment. Military Conscription and Other Developments The regime opened the 27th intake of its compulsory military service training programme at training schools across the country. Kachin singer-songwriter and democracy activist Mun Awng said: “The military dictatorship must be removed. Otherwise, the whole country and future generations will face extremely difficult circumstances.” Regional and International News Taiwan Defense Minister Wellington Koo said military cooperation between the US Indo-Pacific Command and Taiwan is much closer than the public realizes and has significantly strengthened the island’s defense capabilities. Separately, Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs rejected comments by Tom Andrews, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Cambodia, that implied Thailand was responsible for initiating the recent conflict with Cambodia. In Phuket, a fire destroyed restaurants and spa businesses in a three-storey building in Karon, though no injuries were reported.
