Myanmar regime recalls Ambassador to Thailand from Bangkok to Naypyidaw

The military regime in Naypyidaw has recalled its ambassador to Thailand, Zaw Zaw Soe, summoning him back to Myanmar to face interrogation over serious allegations of human trafficking and issuing documentation to political dissidents, according to sources within the regime’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). Zaw Zaw Soe stands accused of colluding with Thai-based Myanmar business figures to facilitate the illegal entry of migrant workers into Thailand via the southern maritime transit point of Kawthaung, opposite Thailand’s Ranong Province. Additionally, investigators are probing charges that the embassy issued passports and travel visas to anti-regime activists and political opponents operating in exile. While the regime has issued no official public statement and Zaw Zaw Soe’s exact whereabouts remain unknown, the summons follows recent visits to Thailand by regime leader Min Aung Hlaing and his newly-appointed Commander-in-Chief Ye Win Oo in August. Notably, the recall occurred just days after Zaw Zaw Soe met with Thai Labour Minister Julapun Amornvivat on Sept. 19 to discuss data collection on Myanmar migrant workers and official financial remittance channels. On Sept. 21, the ambassador and his wife were photographed attending a religious ceremony at the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok. Zaw Zaw Soe was appointed ambassador to Thailand in March 2025, succeeding Chit Swe, who was reassigned to serve as Minister for Labor in Naypyidaw’s military-backed administration following the regime’s 2025-26 elections. Zaw Zaw Soe’s prior assignments include serving as Chargé d’Affaires at the Myanmar Embassy in Singapore in 2024, holding Deputy Director-General positions in both the Ministry of Defense and MOFA between 2022 and 2023, and serving as Counsellor at the embassy in Hong Kong prior to the February 2021 military coup. The recall highlights escalating administrative crackdowns by the regime on overseas diplomatic missions, particularly regarding the control of draft-eligible youth and political exiles fleeing the national conscription law. Officials from Thailand’s Foreign Ministry noted they have not been formally notified of the recall, describing the proceedings as an internal administrative matter for the Myanmar regime.
