Japanese-Backed Amon Explores Electric Wire Factory in Cambodia

PHNOM PENH, Sept 18, 2026 (KPT) – Japanese‑backed Amon World Communications says it is exploring plans to establish an electric wire manufacturing plant in Cambodia, aiming to introduce Japanese production and quality‑control technology while supplying the country’s expanding automotive and industrial sectors. Company representatives outlined the proposal during a meeting with Industry Minister Hem Vanndy, saying they intend to manufacture high‑quality electric wires locally, train Cambodian technicians and apply Japanese safety and quality‑control systems. Amon also proposed cooperation with the ministry on product standards, testing and research and development. The firm, established in Cambodia in August, plans to begin setting up the factory around May 2027. Vanndy welcomed the investment, saying Cambodia seeks to move beyond import substitution toward developing domestic manufacturing capacity that can serve both local and international markets. “Cambodia wants not only to substitute certain imports, but to become a country that can manufacture, export and gain international recognition for our products,” he said. Officials said the ministry could support Amon through standards development, product testing, technology transfer and connections with potential buyers, including vehicle assembly plants and manufacturers of electrical and electronic products. Vanndy added that locally produced wires meeting international standards could supply Cambodia’s growing automotive and industrial sectors while potentially being exported regionally. The investment would also include skills development, with Amon planning to train Cambodian technicians in Japanese production practices. Amon’s major shareholder, Japan’s Nichigoh Communication Electric Wire, manufactures cables that comply with international standards. The proposal comes as Cambodia encourages manufacturers to strengthen local supply chains and move into higher‑value production. Industrial policy has emphasised technology, innovation and quality as the country seeks to climb regional and global value chains. Amon’s delegation was accompanied by partner JCI Lab, which suggested bringing additional companies from China and Japan to Cambodian industrial exhibitions. JCI also presented a proposal from autonomous‑driving firm Zelos to test delivery vehicles at controlled sites such as factories and ports.
