Tropical Depression Weakens, Quang Tri Province Continues Flood Response

On the afternoon of September 13, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting announced that a tropical depression had made landfall in Quang Tri Province and weakened into an area of low pressure over the western part of the province. The maximum wind speed at the center of the low-pressure area has decreased to below level 6. Despite the weakening of the tropical depression, heavy rains are still expected to continue in the central and northern regions of Vietnam. In Quang Tri Province, some areas have recorded rainfall exceeding 500mm. Due to these heavy rains, multiple infrastructure damages have been reported in Quang Tri Province. Among them, the urgent recovery of three barges that drifted and collided with the My Chanh railway bridge is underway. Damage to houses caused by tornadoes has also occurred. Furthermore, large-scale flooding has led to the emergency evacuation of residents during the night. Along the coast, erosion caused by high waves has become severe at My Thuy beach. Vietnam, while continuing its economic growth, also faces vulnerability to natural disasters due to climate change. Areas, especially coastal and low-lying regions, frequently suffer from heavy rains and storm surges, making infrastructure development and disaster preparedness a pressing issue. The Vietnamese government, under its one-party system, faces the dual challenge of economic development and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
