Vietnam-Mongolia Leaders Meet at UNGA, Agree to Boost Economic and Cultural Ties

Vietnamese Party General Secretary and President To Lam met with Mongolian leaders on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York. Lam affirmed that the Party, State, and people of Vietnam highly value and stand ready to engage in close, comprehensive, and extensive cooperation with Mongolia across all sectors. He specifically highlighted a focus on economy, trade, investment, and cultural and people-to-people exchanges within the framework of the Vietnam-Mongolia Comprehensive Partnership. This meeting underscores Vietnam's strategic positioning of its relationship with Mongolia and its intent to foster cooperation under the existing comprehensive partnership framework. Under its one-party system, Vietnam prioritizes economic growth and seeks opportunities for development through strengthened international ties. While relations with its powerful neighbor China are complex, economic linkages remain significant. In this context, enhancing cooperation with Mongolia could serve as part of Vietnam's economic diversification strategy and contribute to geopolitical balance. Lam has previously held meetings in New York with figures such as US Senator Steve Daines and the Presidents of Timor-Leste, Switzerland, and Finland, demonstrating his utilization of the UNGA as a key diplomatic occasion. These engagements illustrate Vietnam's strategy to increase its international profile and maintain and develop relationships with a diverse range of countries.
