Indonesia's PISA 2025 Scores Improve in Reading and Science, Decline in Math

The results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2025 for Indonesian students were officially released on Tuesday (8/9). Compared to the 2022 scores, Indonesia's PISA 2025 scores showed an increase. PISA is a test administered by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) to assess the reading, mathematics, and science abilities of 15-year-old students. The PISA 2025 was conducted in 91 countries with a sample of 760,000 students. The testing methods included Paper Based Test (PBT) and Computer Based Test (CBT), with the examination period in April-May 2025. After reviewing the PISA 2025 results in Indonesia, the Head of the Center for Education Policy and Culture (Badan Kebijakan Pendidikan Dasar dan Menengah - BKPDM) of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, Toni Toharudin, stated that the ministry's policies are on the right track, particularly in terms of enhancing teacher competencies and strengthening literacy. He added that the next challenge is to ensure that current educational policies are implemented consistently and have a tangible impact on the learning experiences of each child in their respective classrooms. "Our success is not measured by Indonesia's rise in the PISA rankings, but by the increasing ability of our students to reason, solve problems, and learn throughout their lives," Toni stated during the PISA 2025 Results Launch at the E Building, Kemendikdasmen Complex, Jakarta, on Tuesday (8/9/2026). Based on PISA 2025 and 2022 data, Indonesia saw an increase in scores in the Reading and Science domains. However, Indonesia's PISA scores declined by two points in Mathematics.
