Indonesian Finance Minister Replaced Amidst Rumors of Power Struggle

Indonesia's Minister of Finance, Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, was abruptly dismissed on September 14th. On September 16th, Deputy Minister of State Secretary Bambang Eko Suhariyanto explained the government's official stance, stating that the change was within the "President's prerogative" and not extraordinary. Bambang emphasized that the replacement of ministers and deputy ministers can occur at any time and is the President's authority. However, Purbaya himself acknowledged that his dismissal was linked to the large-scale reshuffle of 350 officials within the Directorate General of Taxes (DJP). Purbaya stated that some of these personnel changes were related to decisions made as his tenure as Finance Minister neared its end. Purbaya avoided detailing the extent of the connection between his dismissal and the reshuffle of hundreds of tax officials, but stressed that the decisions for personnel reorganization were entirely within the head of state's authority. He added that all policies under his leadership as Finance Minister had followed the President's directives, and he would calmly accept the decision.
