Gov’t, MILF Deploy Peacekeepers to Defuse BARMM Tensions

The Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) have deployed peacekeepers to defuse tensions in the Special Geographic Area of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), the government Peace Implementing Panel (PIP) said Sunday. The deployment is part of the efforts by the Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH) and the Ad Hoc Joint Action Group. The SGA-BARMM comprises areas that voted to join the MILF-led Bangsamoro government in a 2019 plebiscite but are geographically separate from the main BARMM territory. This region has been a flashpoint for tensions, with frequent clashes reported between MILF forces and certain splinter groups over territory and resources, raising concerns about escalating insecurity. Both the government and the MILF have agreed to jointly deploy peacekeepers to de-escalate these tensions and ensure the safety of residents. The peacekeeping force will be tasked with monitoring conflicts, mediating disputes, and promoting peaceful resolutions. This measure is seen as a crucial step in strengthening the implementation of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) signed in 2018 and advancing the government's commitment to establishing lasting peace in BARMM. While the peace process with the MILF has led to improved security in Mindanao after decades of conflict with various Moro insurgent groups, areas like the SGA-BARMM continue to present complex challenges. The joint peacekeeping initiative is expected to be a significant step in addressing these persistent issues.
