Cambodia and Myanmar Leaders Eye Increased Trade Volume

Cambodian Acting Head of State Samdech Techo Hun Sen and President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar Senior General Min Aung Hlaing have focused on strengthening economic, trade, and investment relations between the two countries. Both leaders expressed their desire to see a significant increase in trade volume between Cambodia and Myanmar, which stood at just over $35 million in 2025. This was reported by His Excellency Chea Thireth, Spokesperson of the Senate, following a summit meeting between Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Senior General Min Aung Hlaing on the morning of September 11, 2026, at the Peace Palace, during the Senior General's state visit to Cambodia from September 11 to 12, 2026. During the meeting, the Myanmar President welcomed Cambodian investors to invest more in Myanmar, while the Cambodian side also expressed its intention to promote mutual investment and economic cooperation. The President also expressed support for Samdech Techo Hun Sen's initiative to establish an association of rice exporting countries, considering it a significant initiative, and both sides will continue to discuss and cooperate further. Furthermore, both countries highlighted the potential for strengthening cultural, religious, and tourism ties, given their shared historical, cultural, and Buddhist connections. They aim to promote more active people-to-people exchanges to boost tourism and foster closer ties between the two nations. It is worth noting that the leaders of Cambodia and Myanmar also agreed that strengthening relations requires participation from both the executive and legislative branches to ensure closer and more prosperous cooperation between the institutions and peoples of the two countries.
