India to Equip Dormitory for Needy Female Students in Battambang with Furniture and IT

India will provide furniture and Information Technology (IT) equipment to the dormitory for female students at the Buddhist University in Battambang province. This initiative aims to enhance the living and learning conditions for approximately 140 female students, many of whom are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and remote rural areas, thereby further strengthening the long-standing friendship and educational cooperation between the two nations. On July 15, 2026, the Embassy of India in Cambodia and the Buddhist University of Battambang signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the implementation of a Quick Impact Project (QIP) under the theme "Enhancing the Quality of Life for Female Students." The ceremony was presided over by Mr. Vanlalvawna Bawitlung, Ambassador of India to Cambodia, and Venerable Dr. Vi Sovichhea, President of the Buddhist University of Battambang. According to a press release from the Indian Embassy, the QIP will focus on providing essential furniture and Information Technology (IT) equipment for the newly constructed dormitory for female students at the university. This project is expected to directly benefit around 140 female students, predominantly those facing economic hardship and hailing from remote rural areas. The primary objective is to create a safe, comfortable, and conducive learning environment to help students effectively pursue their higher education. Ambassador Vanlalvawna Bawitlung highlighted the deep and long-standing civilizational ties and friendship between India and Cambodia, rooted in centuries of historical cultural and religious exchanges, particularly through the shared heritage of Buddhism. He added that India remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting educational institutions that contribute to preserving these shared values and equip the younger generation with the necessary knowledge and technical skills to contribute to the development of their communities and nation. This new project further strengthens the enduring partnership between India and various Buddhist universities across the Kingdom of Cambodia. Through past QIPs, India has supported the establishment of Information Technology (IT) Centers at the Buddhist University of Preah Sihanouk in Phnom Penh, and its branches in Battambang, as well as at the Buddhist University of Preah Moha Ghosananda and Samdech Preah Sangharaj Bour Kry University. These initiatives collectively reflect the shared commitment between India and Cambodia to enhance educational opportunities, build institutional capacities, and foster the potential of Cambodian youth. Cambodia remains a valued development partner for India under its 'Act East Policy' and within the framework of the 'Mekong–Ganga Cooperation.' Annually, India implements ten QIPs in Cambodia, covering various priority sectors including education, health, women's empowerment, sanitation, agriculture, and climate change adaptation. To date, a total of 73 Quick Impact Projects have been approved, with 55 successfully completed and 18 currently in the implementation phase. All these projects align with the priority political programs of the Royal Government of Cambodia, underscoring the robust development partnership and steady progress between India and Cambodia, with a focus on delivering tangible benefits at the grassroots level, human resource development, and the enhancement of sustainable livelihoods.
