Mekong, July 9 A militia leader from Namyoun village in Myaing Gyi Ngu, identified as Tu Tu (alias: Lin Zarni Maung), who allegedly protected individuals engaged in illegal gold mining on farmland purchased within the Myaing Gyi Ngu township, has been arrested in Tachileik, Kayin State, according to local residents. Namyoun militia leader Tu Tu (alias: Lin Zarni Maung) colluded with Dhayay La, the administrator of Namyoun village, to receive large sums of money from businessmen and provide protection for illegal gold miners, it is reported. A local news source stated that gold mining was being conducted on farmland purchased in the Seimone village group, Wanpon, and Namyoun village groups within Myaing Gyi Ngu township. "The Namyoun militia leader has been arrested in the Tachileik region. It is not yet known if charges will be filed. In reality, in Myaing Gyi Ngu, he was responsible as the Namyoun militia, collecting taxes and engaging in illegal gold mining. He was protecting illegal gold mining using armed force. Many agricultural lands registered under Form 7 in the names of numerous citizens have also been extensively damaged," the source said. Currently, with the militia leader's arrest, illegal gold mining has been halted, but much of the agricultural land has already been destroyed. Therefore, local residents are calling for effective action if any punitive measures are to be taken. In eastern Shan State, gold mining was previously confined to mountains and rivers. However, later, farmland was purchased, and gold mining began to be conducted within these farmlands, with the majority of those involved being Chinese businessmen. Myaing Gyi Ngu township is also the district of U Lin Zaw Tun, who serves as the Deputy Minister of Immigration and Population in the military council government. #MekongNews #MyaingGyiNguTownship #NamyounMilitia #DhayayLa #LinZarniMaung
