Bangkok BTS Contract Change Underway, Fare Revision and EMV Integration Planned
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is accelerating negotiations to change the contract holder of the Bangkok BTS Skytrain from BTS operator to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), and subsequently to the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA). This transition is expected to result in fare adjustments between 17-45 baht and the integration of the EMV system with the Rabbit Card.
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) is rapidly advancing negotiations to change the operating contract holder of the Bangkok Skytrain (BTS) from the current BTS operator to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), and ultimately to the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA). This contract holder change is expected to significantly impact the future operational structure and fare system of the BTS. According to SRT's announcement, if the contract holder change is realized, BTS fares are projected to be revised within the range of 17 to 45 baht. This signifies a change from the current fare structure and raises concerns about potential increased burdens on users. Furthermore, in terms of the payment system, a system compliant with EMV (Europay, Mastercard, and Visa) standards is planned for introduction, along with enhanced integration with the existing "Rabbit Card" for public transportation. This series of moves is believed to reflect the Thai government's intention to reorganize the public transportation network in the Bangkok metropolitan area. While various discussions have been held regarding BTS operating rights, the SRT's current move to change the contract holder is expected to bring a new phase to these discussions. With MRTA as the operating entity, smoother integration with other rail networks within Bangkok is anticipated. However, detailed considerations regarding potential increases in operating costs and the impact on users will be required moving forward. Source: MGR Online (Business)
