Manila Suspends In-Person Classes for Martial Law Anniversary

MANILA, Philippines — In the capital city of Manila, face-to-face classes across all levels in both public and private schools were suspended on Monday, September 21, as the nation commemorates the 54th anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law under the Marcos regime. Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso, in a statement released Sunday, September 20, cited recommendations from the Manila Police District (MPD). The MPD anticipates significant traffic congestion, road closures, and security risks arising from various public gatherings, marches, and freedom rallies associated with the anniversary. "This suspension is issued to ensure the safety and welfare of students by minimizing their exposure to potential risks associated with heavy traffic, road closures, and large public gatherings," Domagoso stated. Schools that are affected by the suspension have been advised to shift to alternative modes of learning delivery. Protests are anticipated in the Philippines as the country marks the anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law. The Philippine National Police (PNP) had previously announced that law enforcement personnel would be placed on full alert status in anticipation of demonstrations. According to the PNP, over 15,700 personnel are to be deployed on Monday to ensure security during the protests.
