Sumba Timur Residents Apprehend Police Officer Suspected of Cattle Rustling

An unusual incident occurred in East Sumba, Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), Indonesia, where a police officer and an accomplice were apprehended by residents on suspicion of cattle rustling. A video capturing the event has gone viral on social media, causing ripples in the local community. The incident took place in Rambangaru Village, East Sumba Regency. Residents caught the police officer and his associate red-handed driving a pickup truck loaded with two Ongole cattle. According to witnesses, a large crowd gathered at the scene, leading to a tense situation with angry shouts. The two men were nearly attacked by the mob but were rescued by individuals who intervened to calm the situation. Subsequently, the police officer and his associate were taken to the East Sumba Police Station. AKBP I Kadek Hery Cahyadi, the Head of the East Sumba Police, confirmed the incident and stated that the police are currently investigating. The department is meticulously examining the full scope of the event and the extent of each party's involvement based on evidence. Specifically, the police officer allegedly involved is also being independently investigated by the Professional and Security Division (Sipropam) of the police station. Chief Cahyadi emphasized, "We will not draw conclusions before all investigative and probing processes are completed." This incident highlights residents' dissatisfaction with misconduct by public officials and suggests a direct response to such actions, raising concerns about law enforcement and public official ethics in Indonesia.
