Lawmakers, officials, contractors charged in P841-M flood control project mess

A total of 45 individuals and two contracting firms have been charged in connection with a massive corruption scandal involving flood control projects in the Philippines. These individuals, including lawmakers, contractors, and high-ranking officials from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), are accused of their alleged roles in the country's infrastructure development irregularities. The Department of Justice announced that approximately P841 million in cash has been recovered from those implicated in the controversy and remitted to the national treasury. A total of 26 cases have been filed, with defendants facing charges such as violations of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act and malversation of public funds. Among those charged are incumbent and former members of Congress, a former DPWH secretary, and current regional officials. Some defendants have been arrested and detained, while others remain at large. Contracting firms named include Sunwest Inc. and St. Timothy Construction. The case further highlights concerns regarding the transparency and efficiency of infrastructure investments in the Philippines.
