President Prabowo Meets FBI Director in Jakarta, Discusses Cultural Artifact Repatriation

President Prabowo Subianto of Indonesia met with the Director of the United States' Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Kash Patel, at his Kertanegara residence in Jakarta on Wednesday (22/07). Minister of Culture Fadli Zon stated that one of the key topics discussed was the effort to repatriate Indonesian cultural artifacts that were illegally smuggled abroad. Furthermore, the FBI Director directly handed over Indonesian cultural artifacts to President Prabowo as part of the repatriation cooperation between the Indonesian Government and the FBI. "Besides discussions as friends, he also officially brought cultural artifacts that are a result of cooperation between the Indonesian government through the Ministry of Culture and the FBI, namely the return of cultural objects, cultural artifacts, that were illegally smuggled into the United States," Fadli quoted from the official Setneg website. "And after provenance research or origin research was conducted, these items were then returned and brought directly by Kash Patel to President Prabowo," Fadli added. Fadli Zon explained that the repatriated artifacts originated from Papua, specifically cultural heritage belonging to the Dani, Asmat, and Danau tribes in the Lake Sentani area. According to him, these items hold very high historical and cultural value for Indonesia. "I think these are very valuable items because this repatriation process is our effort to restore our cultural sovereignty," he continued. Fadli Zon also revealed that cooperation between Indonesia and the FBI in the return of cultural objects has been ongoing. The FBI has reportedly assisted in returning various important Indonesian artifacts that were stolen on several occasions, including bronze statues and artifacts from several cultural sites. "We hope that cooperation with the FBI, especially regarding the repatriation and restitution of these cultural objects, will be stronger in the future, supported also by the State Secretariat and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," Fadli stated. Furthermore, Fadli emphasized that the return of cultural artifacts is part of the government's commitment to restoring national cultural sovereignty while enriching public knowledge of the nation's historical heritage. The artifacts will be exhibited at the National Museum so they can be enjoyed and studied by the wider community.
