Vietnam's Cai Luong: Bridging North-South Styles for Future Development

A scientific conference was held in Vietnam to explore the distinct characteristics of the traditional music drama "Cai Luong" in the North and South, and the challenges for its future development. Organized by the Vietnam National Traditional Theater (under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism), the event attracted many experts, researchers, and stage artists. The conference discussed the differences between Northern and Southern Cai Luong, its achievements and limitations, and solutions for future development. A key theme was how to popularize this traditional art form among contemporary audiences, especially the youth. In recent years, Cai Luong has been exploring new appeal by integrating with circus arts (e.g., works depicting the story of King Tran Nhan Tong) and incorporating modern stage productions. However, these attempts require further consideration regarding how to maintain tradition while attracting a wider audience, particularly young people. Under Vietnam's one-party system, the preservation and development of cultural heritage are positioned as national priorities, and Cai Luong is no exception. While economic growth progresses, the inheritance of traditional culture constantly faces challenges amidst rapid social change. The gap in values between urban and rural areas, and between generations, particularly affects the acceptance of traditional arts. This conference served as an important opportunity to explore pathways for Cai Luong, a rich cultural heritage of Vietnam, to maintain its vitality and develop within contemporary society.
