Cambodia Strengthens School Meal Program Using Local Produce to Boost Child Nutrition and Farmer Income

In Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey province, efforts are underway to further strengthen and enhance the quality of a program that utilizes locally produced agricultural products for school meals. This initiative is positioned as a "win-win" strategy, aiming to simultaneously achieve improved child nutrition, increased academic engagement, and economic support for local farmers. During a semi-annual work review meeting held on July 28, 2026, Deputy Governor Khoeu Pov issued a strict directive to all schools and relevant stakeholders to continue implementing and further enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of this program. He emphasized the Cambodian government's high regard for the health and education of children, who are considered the future of the nation. The benefits of this program are multifaceted. Children can promote their physical and intellectual growth by receiving nutritious and safe meals. It also serves to alleviate the economic burden on impoverished families. Concurrently, local farmers secure a stable market for their produce, including vegetables, fish, and meat, leading to a direct increase in their income. Chu Bunroeung, Director of the Provincial Department of Education, Youth, and Sports, reported a significant increase in primary school enrollment rates, improved regular attendance, and a notable decrease in absenteeism and dropout rates as a direct result of the program's implementation. The department has established a supply network between schools and agricultural communities, ensuring the trade of fresh, chemical-free produce. Furthermore, the program fosters strong cooperation and a sense of ownership among local authorities, school personnel, and parents. The meeting reiterated the importance of close collaboration between schools and local agricultural communities to ensure regular monitoring of food quality, hygiene, and safety, as well as the direct economic benefits reaching local residents.
