Cambodia Seizes 20 Monkeys Smuggled from Thailand, 5 Arrested

In the Malai district of Cambodia's northwestern Banteay Meanchey province, 20 monkeys, believed to have been illegally brought in from Thailand, were seized, and five suspects were arrested. According to local authorities, on the night of July 27, a patrol by military police in Toul Pong village, near the border, discovered a group transporting monkeys in one car and three motorcycles. In response, a joint force comprising military police, district police, and military personnel conducted a search, apprehending five suspects and securing the 20 monkeys. The seized monkeys are presumed to have been smuggled illegally from Thailand into Cambodia. The head of Malai district confirmed that crackdowns on illegally imported goods are being intensified. This incident is suspected to be part of a wildlife smuggling route that uses Cambodia as a transit point to third countries, particularly Vietnam and China, rather than just an isolated smuggling case.
