DOJ Mandates Acceptance of Bullying Complaints to Aid Victims

The Department of Justice (DOJ) in the Philippines is set to issue an order mandating its local prosecution offices and the DOJ Action Center to receive bullying complaints. Justice Undersecretary Ian Norman Dato announced on Thursday that this initiative aims to provide victims with additional avenues to seek assistance and pursue their complaints. Dato explained that once a complaint is received, it can be assessed, mediated, or referred to the school, which holds primary jurisdiction over such incidents. Alternatively, complaints can be directed to the Women and Children Protection Desk of the Philippine National Police (PNP). The complaints may also be officially docketed under Department Order No. 20. The DOJ reiterated its stance that anti-bullying efforts are a commitment under the Constitution and international law. The department order is expected to be released by next week. This move signifies a serious approach by the Philippine government to address bullying, aiming to enhance prevention measures and ensure prompt relief for victims within schools and communities. Bullying is recognized as a significant social issue in the Philippines, impacting the mental and physical well-being of children and young people, and prompting calls for comprehensive government action.
