Cambodia: 21-Year-Old Sentenced to Life for Brutal Arson Murder of Nine

In Kampong Cham province, Cambodia, a 21-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for a brutal arson and murder case that occurred in 2025, resulting in the deaths of nine people. The Kampong Cham Provincial Court announced the verdict on July 30, sentencing the defendant to life in prison and ordering him to pay $20,000 in compensation for moral damages to the civil plaintiffs (victims' families). According to a press release from the provincial court, the defendant was identified as Sban Mina, male, 21 years old (born in 2005). He was charged with two offenses: intentional homicide and premeditated murder, which occurred on November 23, 2025, in the Kien Khlay area, Toul Sampeou village, Toul Sampeou commune, Stueng Trang district, Kampong Cham province. The defendant was arrested on November 23, 2025, after committing the murders. He is accused of stabbing one victim to death and then setting fire to the house, causing the deaths of eight other individuals who were trapped inside and burned to death. During the trial, the defendant confessed that he harbored resentment towards his wife due to constant conflict, leading him to decide to kill his mother-in-law, wife, brother-in-law, and nephews and nieces, totaling nine people who were sleeping in the house on the night of the incident.
