Mother and two children struck by lightning in Dien Bien, two deceased

In Muong Nhe commune, Dien Bien province, northern Vietnam, three members of a family – a mother and her two daughters – were struck by lightning on July 22 around 6 PM while returning from farm work. The victims were identified as Giàng Thị Bia, born in 1990, and her daughters V.T.N., born in 2015, and V.T.L., born in 2021. The lightning strike occurred approximately 100 meters from the family's home. Following the incident, local residents and commune officials immediately transported the three to the local medical center. Tragically, the two young daughters were pronounced dead due to the severity of their injuries. Ms. Bia is currently receiving medical treatment and is under observation at the medical center. According to a representative from the People's Committee of Muong Nhe commune, upon receiving news of the incident, the commune government promptly visited and offered condolences to the family. They also directed the medical center to provide the best possible care for Ms. Bia. Currently, Muong Nhe commune and many surrounding communes are experiencing thunderstorms, and local authorities are intensifying public awareness campaigns to encourage residents to prepare for such weather events. Thunderstorms are common in Vietnam, particularly during the summer months, and lightning strikes have resulted in casualties. Such natural disasters can disproportionately affect vulnerable communities, especially those living in rural and mountainous areas. While the Vietnamese government is working to enhance meteorological information dissemination and disaster preparedness education to ensure public safety, effectively reaching all regions across the country's vast and diverse terrain remains a challenge.
