Search Continues for 8 Missing Passengers in Palawan Ferry Fire

MANILA, Philippines — Members of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) have continued the search for the eight missing passengers of a ferry that caught fire while sailing in the waters off Coron, Palawan. The PCG’s BRP Cape Engaño on Thursday scoured areas surrounding the islands of Bantac and Lagat in the hope of finding the remaining missing passengers of the M/V June Aster. Personnel of the PCG substation Turda intensified the search by conducting maritime patrols near Napuscod Island and foot patrols along the shoreline. “The PCG remains committed to sustaining the search and rescue operation, and maximizing available assets and personnel to locate the missing people and ensure the safety of the maritime community,” the PCG said in a statement released yesterday. Records showed 77 died and 43 survived when the June Aster caught fire on Sept. 9 following an explosion in the cargo hold. The ferry is owned and operated by the Atienza Interisland Ferries. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about maritime safety in the Philippines, an archipelagic nation where ferries are a vital mode of transport and cargo.
