Myanmar's Ambassador to Thailand has been summoned to Naypyitaw for questioning over allegations of facilitating illegal worker entry and issuing passports to anti-junta individuals. MYANMAR Ambassador to Thailand Zaw Zaw Soe was recently summoned to the capital Naypyitaw for interrogation, The Irrawaddy news outlet quoted sources in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as saying. This followed the visit to Thailand by coup-installed President Min Aung Hlaing and military Commander-in-Chief Gen. Ye Win Oo last month during which the Myanmar leader reaffirmed a commitment to steering his country back toward democracy and strengthening ties between Thai and Myanmar governments, particularly regarding labour cooperation and economic development. The sources stated that the ambassador’s questioning is tied to allegations of colluding with certain Thai-based Myanmar businessmen in facilitating the illicit entry of Myanmar workers — using natural border crossings and the Kawthaung checkpoint (opposite Thailand’s Ranong province) — and issuing passports to individuals opposed to the military government. A source close to the Myanmar embassy in Thailand confirmed the reports. Just five days before his summoning, the ambassador met with Thai Labour Minister Julapun Amornvivatto to discuss data collection on Myanmar migrant workers in Thailand and the establishment of official remittance channels for overseas workers.
