Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun urges UN support for SCEF resistance alliance

Myanmar’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Kyaw Moe Tun, has formally written to U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres requesting international endorsement and official support for the Steering Council for the Emergence of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF)—Myanmar’s premier democratic resistance coalition. In his letter dated July 31, Kyaw Moe Tun emphasized that the SCEF represents the legitimate will of the population in building a federal democratic system: “The SCEF is committed to protecting and promoting the essence of federal democracy and self-determination… It is rooted in the people, supported by the people, and accountable for the people,” said Kyaw Moe Tun. Composition of the SCEF The SCEF serves as a centralized leadership coalition uniting elected civilian representatives and key ethnic armed organizations across Myanmar: Civilian Governance Bodies: Comprises parliamentarians elected during the democratic 2020 general elections who were ousted in the February 2021 coup, specifically including the National Unity Government (NUG) and the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH). The ambassador reiterated his July 6 call for the U.N. to invoke the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) doctrine to safeguard civilian populations. Global campaign ahead of the 81st UN General Assembly The letter coincides with a major global mobilization by the Myanmar diaspora and pro-democracy networks across the United States, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Activists are organizing rallies under the campaign “Retain Our U.N. Ambassador, H.E. U Kyaw Moe Tun”. The global demonstrations will culminate during the 81st Session of the U.N. General Assembly (UNGA), scheduled for September 8–22, 2026, in New York. Credentials Committee Decision: The nine-member U.N. Credentials Committee will convene during the session to decide whether to maintain Kyaw Moe Tun in his seat or accept a competing appointee from the regime in Naypyidaw following its staged elections. Day of Action: Diaspora networks in the United States have announced plans for a synchronized “Day of Action” outside the United Nations headquarters on Sept. 19 to block any attempt by the regime to claim Myanmar’s seat.
