Thailand Extends 'Thai Chai Thai Plus' Subsidy Program for Two More Months

The Thai government is set to extend the "Thai Chai Thai Plus 60/40" household support program for another two months, with the measure originally scheduled to end on September 30th now slated to continue through October and November. The Fiscal Policy Committee has in principle approved the extension, and it is expected to be presented to the cabinet for final approval on Tuesday, September 22nd. The program, which subsidizes daily expenses such as food, beverages, consumer goods, and services with the government covering 60% and citizens 40%, will utilize remaining funds from the initial loan allocation for citizen relief. Crucially, the government assures that no funds will be diverted from the 200 billion baht earmarked for energy transition. According to the Ministry of Finance, approximately 40 to 50 billion baht remains in the 200 billion baht loan for citizen relief, which is deemed sufficient to support the program's extension for two months. This measure is intended to bolster consumer purchasing power towards the end of the year, particularly for those grappling with high living costs. However, public uncertainty remains regarding the monthly subsidy amount, with questions arising whether it will continue at the previous level of 1,000 baht or be reduced to 500 baht per month. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance indicated that details on the subsidy amount await cabinet decision.
