NUG Deputy Human Rights Minister Aung Kyaw Moe resigns

Aung Kyaw Moe, the Deputy Minister of Human Rights for the National Unity Government (NUG), announced on social media on 31 July that he has resigned from his post, effective 31 July. NUG Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson Nay Phone Latt confirmed the resignation to Mizzima, saying via message this afternoon: “It is true that he has submitted his resignation.” Aung Kyaw Moe is the first Rohingya national to hold a ministerial-level position in a Myanmar government since 1962. Following the 2021 coup, he served as an advisor and subsequently as Deputy Minister of Human Rights, appointed in June 2023. His social media statement said his resignation does not stem from policy disagreements, conflicts, or friction with NUG leadership. “This decision is not a departure from our shared goals. It is merely a transition to a new role where I can more effectively contribute to the vision of a democratic Myanmar built on rights, human rights, and a federal democratic system,” he said. He said the decision was a strategic one, allowing him to focus more effectively on the national rights, political representation, dignity, and long-term interests of the Rohingya people at this juncture. Going forward, he said he will continue working with regional and international partners to strengthen Rohingya political leadership, foster community unity, and secure aid and justice for the Rohingya cause. He said Myanmar’s future can only be guaranteed by building a genuine federal democratic union based on equality, justice, the rule of law, and respect for the rights of all ethnic nationalities, and said he remains ready to collaborate closely with the NUG, Ethnic Revolutionary Organizations (EROs), democratic forces, and civil society organizations wherever their shared goals align.
