DPR Urges Government to Create KKB Eradication Roadmap After Jayawijaya Shooting

Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) has urged the government to formulate a roadmap for eradicating armed criminal groups (KKB) in Papua. This call comes in the wake of a shooting incident that resulted in the deaths of three employees of the Agriculture Service in Jayawijaya Regency, who were delivering livestock feed. Oleh Soleh, a member of DPR Commission I, described the act of violence as a human tragedy that must not be allowed to continue. He expressed deep concern over the shooting of the three Jayawijaya Regency Agriculture Service employees in Kampung Muliama, Papua Mountains, on Wednesday, September 9. He urged security forces to act swiftly and conduct a thorough investigation. "I am deeply saddened and concerned by this incident. Three government employees were victims of violence while performing their duties. The TNI and Polri must move quickly to investigate this case and take firm action against the perpetrators," Soleh stated on Friday. Soleh emphasized that the state must not provide any space for armed groups to continue their acts of violence against the community and government officials performing public service duties. He believes this incident should serve as a momentum for the government to strengthen its efforts in comprehensively eradicating the KKB in Papua. "This must be a momentum to cleanse KKB from Papua, Indonesia. They have repeatedly committed acts of violence and murder. The state must not remain in a reactive position every time there are victims," said the politician from the PKB party. Soleh asserted that handling the KKB issue requires more than just partial or case-by-case approaches. He stated that the government, in conjunction with the TNI and Polri, needs to develop a comprehensive strategy with clear targets, stages, indicators, and evaluations. "Don't just handle it case by case. The apparatus must develop a comprehensive strategy to eradicate KKB. There must be a roadmap for eradicating KKB in Papua, so that the state's steps do not only emerge when there is a case," he said. According to Oleh Soleh, a roadmap is crucial for making security handling in Papua more planned, measurable, and sustainable. Security strategies must also be integrated with development approaches, public services, and the protection of civil society. He warned that a reactive approach could potentially lead to a recurrence of violence. Therefore, the government must have a long-term strategy to create security and ensure that the Papuan people can live safely and with dignity. "The government must be more serious in solving the KKB problem in Papua. If the handling is only partial, similar cases will continue to recur. The state must be present consistently, not only when there is shooting or murder," Soleh concluded. Soleh also called on the police to conduct a professional investigation to uncover the perpetrators, their networks, and the motives behind the shooting. "Law enforcement must be carried out firmly while upholding the law and protecting civilians," he added.
