19 University Student Groups Protest Myanmar Leader's Visit to Thailand

Nineteen student groups from three major universities in Thailand – Chulalongkorn University, Thammasat University, and Kasetsart University – issued a joint statement on August 7, strongly denouncing the official visit of Myanmar's junta leader, Min Aung Hlaing, to the Kingdom. The statement condemned the Thai government's "welcome" of the Myanmar leader amidst widespread human rights abuses in his country. The students highlighted the ongoing suppression of democracy and the numerous civilian casualties since the military coup. They urged the Thai government to uphold the principles of human rights and democracy. The visit occurred under the Bhumjaithai-led government in Thailand. The student groups argued that Thailand, as a member of ASEAN, has a responsibility to promote peace and stability in the region, and that this reception of the junta leader goes against international expectations. The protest statement aligns with international calls for improved human rights conditions in Myanmar and a return to democratic processes. The students expressed deep concern over Thailand's apparent willingness to overlook human rights violations.
