Siem Reap Aims for World-Class 'Beyond Angkor' Status by 2030
Siem Reap Province has launched its 2026-2030 Tourism Development Plan, aiming to transform into a world-class smart heritage destination by diversifying attractions beyond Angkor Wat and enhancing visitor experiences.
SIEM REAP, Sept 18, 2026 (KPT) – Siem Reap Province, home to the World Heritage‑listed Angkor Wat temple, has launched its Tourism Development Plan 2026–2030, setting out a roadmap to transform the province into a world‑class smart heritage destination by expanding its tourism offer beyond Angkor, officials said Friday. Tourism Minister Huot Hak presided over the launch at Siem Reap Provincial Hall, attended by around 200 participants including provincial authorities, tourism operators, communities, educational institutions and young content creators. Hak described Siem Reap as the “soul” of Cambodia and home to Angkor Wat, a World Heritage Site and symbol of national identity. But he stressed the province must build on its heritage assets as regional competition intensifies and traveller behaviour changes. Under the concept of “Siem Reap Beyond Angkor,” the plan calls for diversifying tourism products, improving service quality, strengthening visitor safety and developing new experiences to meet the expectations of younger travellers. Hak urged innovation in creating distinctive landmarks and making better use of underutilised sites and public spaces. He also called for stronger storytelling at destinations, saying tourism should connect visitors with history, culture, architecture, local lifestyles and cuisine. Destination branding will be a priority, with Siem Reap encouraged to establish a distinctive identity capable of leaving a lasting impression. Expanding nighttime tourism is another focus, seen as a way to extend visitor stays. The plan builds on efforts to promote tourism beyond Angkor by highlighting cultural, natural and community‑based experiences, from Phnom Kulen and Tonle Sap to rural and ecotourism sites. The province has also pursued smart‑city initiatives to improve urban management and support tourism development. Through the 2026–2030 plan, Siem Reap aims to combine its globally recognised heritage with diversified products, stronger branding, improved visitor experiences and greater community participation. The strategy seeks to ensure Siem Reap remains a competitive international destination while generating broader and more inclusive benefits for local communities.
