Vietnam–France relations bolstered by intellectual cooperation: expert

Dr Frederic Roustan highlighted the importance of scientific and intellectual cooperation, stating that despite ups and downs in bilateral diplomatic, political, and economic relations over the decades, connections between French and Vietnamese scientists and intellectuals have been maintained, contributing to exchanges between the two countries. He emphasized scientific and intellectual cooperation as a crucial element in stabilizing bilateral relations. Vietnam has recently focused on deepening its Comprehensive Strategic Partnership with France, with increasing calls for breakthroughs in economic cooperation. In this context, experts view academic exchanges as providing a strong foundation that is less susceptible to fluctuations in diplomacy and the economy. Under Vietnam's one-party system, state-led economic growth is a top priority, and the development of international relations is pursued to maximize national interests. Dr. Roustan's view suggests that while strengthening economic ties with France is important, fostering mutual understanding in cultural and intellectual spheres is even more essential for long-term relationship stability. This indicates that Vietnam prioritizes not only economic gains but also the utilization of soft power in its foreign relations.
