
Cambodia Launches "Green Sprout" Exhibition and 1 Million Palm Tree Planting Initiative
Cambodia has launched an environmental exhibition titled "Green Sprout" and announced a national movement to plant one million palm trees in 2026. This initiative aims to address climate change and foster a sustainable future.
PHNOM PENH, July 10, 2026— His Excellency Sok Chenda Sophea, Deputy Prime Minister and High Representative of Samdech Techo Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, presided over the opening ceremony of the "Green Sprout" exhibition and announced the "One Million Palm Trees Planting Event" on the morning of July 10, 2026, at the Ministry of Environment. The historic event was graced by the presence of His Holiness Ku Sopheap, a dignitary of the Mahānikāya Order of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and attended by His Excellency Dr. Eang Sophalleth, Minister of Environment, along with leaders from the National Assembly, Senate, and the Royal Government of Cambodia, representatives from ministries and institutions, ambassadors, the UN Resident Coordinator in Cambodia, development partners, collaborators, associations, civil society organizations, monks, natural protected area communities, the private sector, youth, and many students. His Excellency Dr. Eang Sophalleth stated that today, they are not only gathered to open the "Green Sprout" exhibition but are also jointly launching a national movement aimed at enhancing the participation of every citizen in protecting and restoring natural resources. "Green Sprout" symbolizes hope, responsibility, and a new beginning for a green, clean, and sustainable Cambodia. His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister Sok Chenda Sophea strongly promoted the green movement, considering the "Green Sprout" exhibition as a national mission of the highest value in cultivating a spirit of love for the environment, nature, and forests. This activity aims to expand green cover in response to climate change through the exhibition of saplings and a campaign to plant one million palm trees, thereby promoting national identity and the environment, the Deputy Prime Minister added. Concurrently, His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister Sok Chenda Sophea praised the Ministry of Environment's initiative for its goal of increasing forest cover to respond to climate change and create natural wealth for future generations. He emphasized that participation in the green movement should be demonstrated through concrete actions, such as personally receiving and planting saplings. It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Environment plans to distribute approximately five million assorted saplings free of charge to the public in 2026. The "Green Sprout" exhibition and the "One Million Palm Trees Planting Event" for 2026 will take place from July 10 to July 13, 2026, in front of the Ministry of Environment building in Phnom Penh. The event features exhibitions and distribution of saplings at various booths organized by the Ministry of Environment, the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and Protection, the 25 provincial departments of environment nationwide, youth teams from the Red Cross and Red Crescent, the Youth Union of the Union of Cambodian Youth Federations (UYC), scouts, local authorities at all levels, teachers, students, development partners, civil society organizations, the "One Village, One Product" movement, and members of natural protected area communities. Furthermore, the Ministry of Environment is also exhibiting electric cars and motorcycles to encourage the public to use these types of transportation, contributing to reducing carbon emissions into the environment, enhancing urban cleanliness, and supporting Cambodia's vision for 2050 as a carbon-neutral country.
