Vietnamese Buddhism Concludes Laos Activities, Transitions to New Leadership

On September 24, in Vientiane, the Vietnamese Buddhist Church's Coordination Committee in Laos held a ceremony to summarize its Buddhist affairs for the 2022-2027 term. Concurrently, the personnel decisions for the committee's 2026-2031 term were announced and presented. This summation ceremony served as a crucial opportunity to evaluate the activities of Vietnamese Buddhists within Laos and to define future directions. The Vietnamese Buddhist Church, operating under Vietnam's one-party system, engages in religious activities both domestically and internationally, often in coordination with the state's social and cultural policies. Particular emphasis is placed on collaboration with overseas Vietnamese communities, viewed as vital for national cohesion and cultural preservation. Reports indicate that the Vietnamese community residing in Laos actively participates in cultural events, including the traditional "Vu Lan" festival and celebrations for the Lunar New Year (Bính Ngọ 2026). These activities are often conducted with support and guidance from Vietnam, strengthening human and cultural ties between the two nations. Past reports also mention meetings between Trần Cẩm Tú, Standing Member of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee, and officials from the Vietnamese Embassy and the Vietnamese community in Laos. The engagement of the Vietnamese Buddhist community in Laos can be seen not merely as religious practice but potentially as part of Vietnam's foreign policy and soft power strategy. Amidst Vietnam's ongoing economic growth, supporting cultural and religious activities abroad is considered beneficial for maintaining national identity and expanding Vietnam's influence internationally.
