Magway City Sesame Market Sees Slow Sales

Sesame that has arrived in the Magway City sesame market is experiencing sluggish sales due to a decline in quality, according to U Kyaw Tun, the Vice Chairman of the Magway Commodity Exchange. The sesame entering the market is irrigated sesame from the west bank of the Ayeyarwady River. It is possible that the quality has deteriorated due to continuous rainfall, and as a result, sesame sales are slow, and the market is also cold, said U Kyaw Tun. This year, sesame farmers in the Magway Region are primarily cultivating black sesame (Semon sesame) and only a small amount of white sesame, it is reported. Last year, at the beginning of the sesame harvest, black sesame was priced at 250,000 Kyats per tin, while white sesame was only around 100,000 Kyats per tin, which is why they primarily cultivated black sesame this year. This year, black sesame is only fetching a maximum price of around 180,000 Kyats per tin, and farmers may incur losses, it is said. Magway sesame, cultivated on the east bank of the Ayeyarwady River, is of good quality and is expected to be harvested abundantly from mid-August.
