Cambodia and Brazil Eye Deeper Ties Following First Resident Ambassador Appointment

Deputy Prime Minister for Permanent Affairs, Minister of the Office of the Council of Ministers, H.E. Vongsey Vissoth, on July 28, 2026, received and held discussions with H.E. Vivian Loss Sanmartin, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Cambodia, at the Office of the Council of Ministers. To begin, H.E. Vongsey Vissoth warmly welcomed and congratulated H.E. Vivian Loss Sanmartin on her appointment as the first resident Brazilian Ambassador to Cambodia, highly valuing the progress of bilateral relations between the two countries. H.E. Vivian Loss Sanmartin expressed her gratitude to the Deputy Prime Minister for granting her and her colleagues the opportunity to pay a courtesy call and discuss work, stating it was an honor to be appointed as the first Brazilian Ambassador to Cambodia. She highlighted her desire to gain a clearer understanding of Cambodia to jointly explore potential sectors of both countries and share Brazil's best practices in areas such as agriculture, food processing, vocational training, global health programs, national social assistance programs, and digital governance. She expressed strong commitment during her diplomatic tenure to strengthening friendship and diversifying cooperation in all fields between the two countries, particularly promoting connections between investors and businessmen from both nations. H.E. Vongsey Vissoth highly appreciated Brazil's significant role in all multilateral and regional forums, noting Brazil's membership in the BRICS bloc and its current status as an ASEAN sectoral dialogue partner, with prospects of becoming a full ASEAN dialogue partner in the future. Although Cambodia and Brazil are geographically somewhat distant, relations and cooperation between the two countries have grown increasingly closer. Specifically, trade volume between the two countries has increased year by year, and Cambodia has welcomed Brazilian tourists, albeit in small numbers. The Deputy Prime Minister also pointed out that Brazil is a large country with a significant population and a highly diversified economy, making it a key nation in the Latin American region. In this context, Cambodia and Brazil have ample room and potential to strengthen and expand cooperation in politics, technology, and several priority sectors such as economy, trade, investment, agriculture, digital, skills development, and tourism, as well as people-to-people exchanges. On this occasion, both sides also discussed the possibility of promoting tourism cooperation and attracting more Brazilian tourists to visit Cambodia through promotion and flight connectivity to facilitate travel. Concurrently, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continue strengthening their partnership and expanding cooperation to higher levels across all sectors.
