Caskets with anti-CCP messages in Metro Manila aimed to 'attract attention' — NCRPO

MANILA, Philippines — The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said five caskets left across Metro Manila bearing anti-Chinese Communist Party (CCP) messages were “intended to attract attention.” “Police units across Metro Manila have been directed to strengthen vigilance and prevent any similar occurrence while the investigation continues,” the NCRPO maintained in a statement on Tuesday. The NCRPO’s statement came after reports circulated on social media showing caskets with messages like “China, we are not afraid of you” and “We condemn the CCP.” NCRPO chief Maj. Gen. Jonnel Estomo said the caskets were placed in strategic locations to gain public attention. “This is a form of protest. They want to attract attention,” Estomo said in a press conference. He added that the police were still investigating who was behind the act, but assured the public that the situation was under control. “We are investigating the perpetrators of this act. We are also coordinating with other agencies to ensure that this will not happen again,” Estomo said. The incident has sparked discussions online, with some netizens condemning the act as a provocation, while others supported it as a legitimate form of protest against China’s actions in the West Philippine Sea. Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has yet to issue a statement on the incident. The Philippines and China have been embroiled in a maritime dispute over the South China Sea, with both countries accusing each other of violating international law and territorial integrity. The United States has also expressed concern over China’s aggressive behavior in the region and has pledged to support its allies, including the Philippines.
