US Provides $3 Million for Mine Clearance in Cambodia to Aid Recovery and Economic Development

The United States has announced a $3 million funding package to APOPO (an organization dedicated to mine action) to support mine and unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance activities in Cambodia. This funding, provided over three years, will be allocated to mine clearance in Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey provinces, and UXO clearance in Mondulkiri province. During a working visit to APOPO's Mine Action Center in Siem Reap, US Embassy Chargé d'Affaires Aleks Zittle personally witnessed the commitment and innovative technology of the team behind this vital life-saving mission. This new project is expected to boost economic, agricultural, and tourism development across Cambodia, while also providing safe land and creating new opportunities for many Cambodian families. Partners like APOPO, supported by the United States, play a crucial role in Cambodia's journey towards becoming a mine-free country in the future, contributing to economic growth and opening new opportunities for communities nationwide. Cambodia has long faced the threat of landmines and UXO from past conflicts, including the Pol Pot regime. These remnants of war have posed serious dangers to human life, restricted the use of agricultural land, and hindered movement. The US assistance marks a significant step towards addressing these long-standing challenges and supporting Cambodia's recovery and sustainable development.
