Forest fires in East Java's Mount Semeru National Park have left a significant mark on the ecosystem surrounding the picturesque Ranu Kumbolo Lake. The fire, which broke out on the night of August 26, 2026, ravaged large areas of the park, turning the lakeside vegetation black. Videos posted on Instagram vividly capture the once lush lakeside now blackened by the fire's aftermath. Two days prior to the reporting date, the owner of the Instagram account Langit Mahameru discovered two electronic devices and a tripod in a burnt savanna area. "Just a quick update on Kumbolo. Found some belongings of hikers previously reported missing in Oro-Oro Ombo," they wrote, indicating the items were found between Oro-oro Ombo and Cemoro Kandang. "One of them was in relatively intact condition, but the LCD was damaged. Please inform the guide who accompanied the hikers," they added, showing the burnt condition of the devices. This situation illustrates the impact of the forest and land fires (karhutla) in Mount Semeru, which began on the night of Wednesday (August 26, 2026). At that time, approximately 170 hikers were still on the trails with their guides. "On Thursday morning, they were evacuated and brought down. All are safe in Ranu Pani," stated Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha, Head of the Mount Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS) Center, in a statement to journalists on Saturday (August 29, 2026). The forests around Ranu Kumbolo are a habitat for various wildlife. However, TNBTS has not yet been able to quantify the fire's impact on the wild animal population in Ranu Kumbolo.
