Buddhist Temples Donate to Cambodian Red Cross for Community Support

Temples in Cambodia's Russey Keow district have donated approximately 8 million riels (nearly $2,000 USD) worth of food, essential goods, and cash to the local branch of the Cambodian Red Cross to support needy residents. The donations will be used to assist impoverished individuals, disaster victims, and those displaced by border conflicts with Thailand. Khmer Buddhist monks in Phnom Penh, specifically in the Russey Keow district, have provided a significant contribution to the Cambodian Red Cross's district branch. The donation, totaling close to 8 million riels, comprises essential food items and cash, aimed at aiding vulnerable populations within the district. This initiative underscores the Buddhist community's commitment to social welfare and humanitarian aid. According to local reports, the funds and goods were accumulated through the savings of monks across various pagodas in the district, supplemented by donations from Buddhist followers. The district's monastic leadership has set a goal to make such contributions to the Red Cross branch every three months, ensuring a consistent flow of support. Chin Bunthoeun, the district governor and head of the local Cambodian Red Cross branch, expressed his profound gratitude to the pagodas for their continuous generosity. He specifically highlighted the importance of supporting individuals who have been displaced from border areas due to conflicts with Thai forces, noting that some have since returned to their homes while others have left children behind to continue their education. Bunthoeun stressed the local authorities' responsibility to provide assistance to these displaced persons to alleviate their daily hardships. Furthermore, Bunthoeun stated that a portion of the donated supplies would be allocated to soldiers on the front lines, even though they are understood to receive adequate support from the government. This gesture aims to bolster the morale of the troops defending the nation's territorial integrity, reinforcing the connection between those on the home front and the military. The donated items include rice, instant noodles, juice, soy sauce, fish sauce, canned fish, milk, tea, sugar, bottled water, and kitchenware, along with approximately 4 million riels in cash, bringing the total value to nearly 8 million riels.
